We are often told that the iPhone is a game changer. Revolutionary. Ahead of it's time even. The touch screen interface is a joy to use. We find it hard to disagree, but come December we sometimes think that perhaps the iPhone was designed for a future of eternal summer time thanks to global warming. Because using a touch screen smartphone in the cold isn't fun at all.

You know how it is. You are out in the snow. Your phone rings. Once you manage to extract your phone from whichever pocket it is buried in, you swipe to answer and nothing happens. Swipe again. Still nothing. Eventually the caller gives up and rings off. The problem is that the capacitive screens found on smartphones just don't work when used with gloved fingers.

So when out and about in the cold, not only do you have to dig through your coat's voluminous pockets to find your ringing phone, you also have to remove your gloves to actually answer the call. All within a matter of seconds. Definitely not cool.
