For anyone unfamiliar with the original Otamatone, describing this Japanese oddity is something of a mission. The best way to describe it is as a musical instrument-cum-cartoon character-cum-beat box-cum-insanity thing.
Shaped like a black musical note (a quaver to be precise), the Otamatone has a cheerful little face on the front of the note's body. A selection of buttons line the stalk of the note, pressing one of which begins the music.
A selection of eleven tunes are pre-programmed into the Otamatone - just press the appropriate button to begin. As the tune start however, you can get your Otamatone to 'sing' along by squeezing the sides of it's mouth. When the mouth opens you will get an 'aaaah' singing sound, whilst when the mouth remains closed the singing becomes more of a humming 'mmmm'.
It may sound pretty stupid, but the variations of singing are virtually endless. Worse still, the Otamatone is totally addictive. There is an undeniable charm to the little fellas singing (although your neighbours may not agree).
The Otamatone can play: The Frog Song (yes, that frog song), Greensleeves, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, My Grandfather's Clock, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Fr Elise, Wedding March, Silent Night, Beethoven's 9th and Auld Lang Syne. Enjoy!
