The 1931 painting 'The Persistence of Time' by Spanish genius (or nutter?) Salvador Dali is well known for its odd, melting timepieces. Although Dali originals are way beyond the means of most of us, we can still get our hands on a small piece of surrealist timekeeping with the Melting Shelf Clock.

Unlike most mantelpiece timepieces, the Melting Shelf Clock actually rests on the edge, giving the appearance of a clock that has, you know, melted. The top of the clock lies flat on the shelf whilst the rest hangs over the edge. Careful construction means that an invisible counterbalance keeps the clock safely on the shelf without the need for nails or glue.

And just because the Melting Shelf Clock looks a little bit crazy doesn't mean it isn't functional too. A cleverly constructed mechanism means that this particular clock really works! Despite looking a bit distorted, all of the clock face numbers are in the correct places and the hands point at the correct time when required, creating a fantastic talking point for surrealists, art lovers and horologists alike.
