If you were like us as kids, banging saucepans with a spoon was the only way to practice our rhythm skills (there was no Band Hero back then). Bizarrely none of our parents ever recognised our latent talent and consequently we never got the drum kit we coveted so much for Christmas.

The Drum Playmat could be just what is needed to correct this injustice. Looking and feeling like a child's playmat, this particular mat actually contains some rather clever functionality which turns it into a virtual drum kit.

Printed on the upper surface of the mat is a realistic looking drum kit and, when struck with the supplied drum sticks, emit a similarly realistic sound to match. Hit the bass drum to generate a satisfying thud, the snare for a higher-pitched note and the cymbal for a good crash. Hit each drum to create your own rhythms and loops, or to just play along with your favourite tracks.

If that wasn't enough though, a built in 3.5mm jack allows you to connect headphones so that you can play along without disturbing your neighbours. You can use the same jack to connect an MP3 player or iPod for playing music through the Drum Playmat's integrated speakers.

Best of all, the Drum Playmat takes up a fraction of the space of a full size kit and when you've finished thumping your skins you can fold the mat up for easy storage in a cupboard or under a bed. Banging!
