The History of Stocking Fillers

There is some confusion as to where the tradition of stocking fillers began. One of the most popular stories comes from Saint Nicholas. One Christmas he wanted to help an elderly father to three daughters who was very poor. The father was worried about what would happen to his daughters once he passed away as he could not afford to pay for each girl to be married. Saint Nicholas wanted to help him after hearing the villagers gossiping about his situation.

Late at night he crept down his Chimney and he left three small bags of gold, one for each daughter. After spotting some stockings drying on the mantelpiece he placed one bag of gold in each one. The daughters and their father awoke the next morning and were delighted with the surprise. Each daughter was able to get married and the father no longer worried about the future without him. Stocking fillers are traditionally small gifts. In the past, some Children would receive pieces of coal if they had been naught, and others received oranges to represent the gold given by Saint Nicholas. These days it is more common to find small and fun gifts. They do not need to be expensive and are given in addition to the larger presents found under the tree.
