Our children have it easy these days. It wasn’t too long ago that naughty children would receive a lump of coal as a present on Christmas morning, something modern children would not be able to stand. But where did the tradition of giving coal come from? There are several suggestions about the origin, let’s look at a couple.

In Britain many of the homes were heated by coal in the 1800’s so it was a valuable commodity. The coals were used in pans and put in the beds to heat them up for a cosy nights sleep. It was believed that poor people were not wealthy in this life as a punishment from God for their family’s bad behaviour and so the poor children received coal. The rich children on the other hand would have enough coal and therefore they received toys, dolls and sweet treats instead. Lucky things!

Some people believe that the tradition of giving coal to naughty children originated in 16th Century Holland. The children would place their clogs in front of the fire and if they were naughty the coal would be placed inside. Good children often were lucky enough to receive a cookie or a toy as an Xmas gift.
